Antique Sampler, Circa 1832, by Sarah Ann Davies. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, pale blue, gold, browns and black. Verse reads, 'Tell me ye knowing and Difcerning few>Where I may find A friend both firm and true>Who dares stand by me when in deep Diftrefs>And then his Love and friendship most exprefs'. Signed, 'The Work of Sarah Ann Davies Aged 10'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden, a gentleman, dogs, birds, stags, trees, crowns, thistles, potted flowering plants, butterflies, diamonds and crowns. Framed in a modern white frame with gilded highlights. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen mount which is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with brown paper.
