Antique Sampler, 1829 by Elizabeth Trill. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, browns and black. Verse reads 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand>As the first effort of an infant hand>And while her fingers on the canvas move>Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love>With thy dear children let her have a past>And write thy name thyself upon her heart'. Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Trill Her Work Aged 8 Years 1829'. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including two young ladies with their dogs by their sides, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, bee hives, rabbits and butterflies. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen mount and tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with wood.
