1837 Antique Sampler by Mary Peckham Age 9. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, dark brown, pink and black. Verse reads, 'Guide blessed Lord my erring feet.>Into the way of truth>And let thy word in counsel sweet>Direct my heedless youth>To thy kind care may I resign>My childhood's earliest hours>And grane oh Lord, by grace divine,>My heart may feel thy pow'r>May gladly own my Saviour's sway>And find' tis Heaven to obey'. Signed and dated, 'Maria Peckham finished this Sampler May 6th 1837 in the 9th Year of her Age'. A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, flowers, fir trees, crown, oak leaves and acorns and birds. Framed in a wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is stretched over card. Frame backed with brown paper.
