1848 Ship Sampler by Rosalinda Anderson. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, cream, copper, black, brown and blue. Inscriptions read 'Life is short> Death is sure>Sins the cuase> Christs the cure.', 'Keep> the Sabbath> Holy' and 'Thy world is everlasting truth.> How pure is everypage.>That holy book shall guide our youth> And well support our age'. Many family initials listed. Signed and dated, 'Sewed. By. Rossalinda. Anderson. 1848. Aged. 12. At. I. Braes. School.' A fantastic set of motifs, including a finely embroidered sailing ship/boat. Also, an owl, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, rabbits, fruit baskets, deer, hearts, stags and peacocks. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen. Frame backed with wood and brown paper.
