Description - ID#22198
1838 Sampler by Mary Ann Sanders. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, pale blue, white, pink and blue. Verse entitled 'THE ROSE' reads, 'The Rose had been wash'd just wash'd in a shower>Which Mary to Anna convey'd,>The plentiful moisture encrumbr'd the flow'r,>And weigh'd down its beautiful head.>>The cup was all fill'd the leaves were all wet.>And it seem'd to a fanciful view.>To weep for the bud it had left with regret.>From the flourishing bush were it grew.>I hastily seiz'd it unfit as it was.>For a nosegay so dripping and drown'd.>And swinging it rudely too rudely alas.>I snapp'd it_it fell to the ground.>And such, I exclaim'd is the pitiless part,>Some act by the delicate mind,>Regardless of wringing and breaking a heart.>Already to sorrow resigned.>This elegant Rose had I shaken it less,>Might have bloom'd with it's owner a while,>And the tear that is wip'd with a little addres,>May be follow'd perhaps with a smil.'. Signed and dated 'Maryann Sanders Completed this Sampler April 27 1838 Aged 10 Years'.
