Antique Sampler, 1834, Sarah Ann Wallace. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours black, red, green, copper, pink, brown and white. Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand> As the first effort of an infant's hand,> And whilst her fingers o'er this canvas move,> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her share a part> And write thy name thyself upon her heart'. Signed and dated, 'Sarah Ann Wallace marked this Sampler in the ninth year of her age. 1834'. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a mansion house, entitled, 'Nottingham Castle Burnt Octr.10th 1831', a house with a garden, birds, trees, laden with fruit, stags, squirrels, crowns, roses, two pictorial scenes, grapes and fir trees. Framed in a modern maple-effect frame with gilt slip and glass. Stitched to linen with card backing.
