1821 Scottish Sampler by Ann Crawford. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with gilt slip and glass. Tacked to a board with card backing. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, dark brown, pink, copper and black. Verse reads 'The Lord shall keep my soul he shall>Preferve me from all ill>Hence forth my GoinGs out and in>God keep forever will>If he will contend with me I cannot>Answer him one of a thufand'. Signed and with family initials, signed and dated, 'Ann Crawford march 29 1821'. Also , 'Teached by Janet Miller'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a line of people ('boxers') making offerings to a person holding out a collection bowl. Dogs, peacocks with fanned tails, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, rabbits, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, hearts, a house with a garden, diamonds and butterflies
