Antique Band Sampler, 1738, by Elizabeth Hickman. Framed in an old rose wood frame, with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Fixed to board with wood and brown paper backing. The sampler is very finely worked in silk, on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Divider lines in various patterns. Colours pale blue, cream, yellow, dark brown, black, red and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case. Signed and dated, 'ELIZabeth HICKman worked this samplar in the thirteenth year of her Age & in the year of our Lord God 1738', and 'EH 1738'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including the King and Queen both with initials (KG and QC, presumably King George II and Queen Caroline) , a palace and crown jewels both with guards either side, lions, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, crowns, hearts, Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and swans.
