1801 Sampler by Jane Berrey. Framed in an old wood frame with glass and a wood backing. Glued to a card backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, white, black, blues and pink. Verse entitled, 'Live to Die' reads, 'You whose fond ?hen do to heaven aspire>? Make those blefs abodes your ?ule I ??sire>If you are wise and have that girls to gain>Use well your time ??? ??? An Hour in vain>??? Not ??? Honest your vain Thoughts employ>But think this day the laft you fhall enjoy'. Signed and dated, 'Jane Berrey her work Aged 11 Years 1801'. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a lady and a gentleman, lions, stars, dogs, birds, angels, potted flowering plants, stags, squirrels, fir trees, cross, crowns, hearts, a shepherd and two shepherdess' tending their sheep, a windmill sailing boats, a mermaid, a cow, a peacock, butterflies, diamonds, fleur-de-lis and houses
