Antique Sampler, 1825, by Mary Rowland. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card. Acid free card backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours red, blue, green, pale green, green and gold. Verse entitled 'Youth' reads, 'Behold the Labour of my growing age, And View the work that did my hours engage, With anxious Care I did each Letter place, A Smile to gain from my dear parents face.' And, 'Go Like your heavenly father feed the poor, And Carry Comfort to the Sick mans Door, Pity the widow be the Orphan's friend, And if you Cannot give them freely Lend.' And, 'Duty Fear and Love we owe to God above'.. Signed and dated 'Mary Rowland her Sampler marked in the 11th year of her age 1825'. A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including potted flowering plants, dogs, flowers, stags, fruit baskets, trees, birds and windmills.
