1812 Scottish House Sampler by July Orr. The sampler is worked in silk on a very fine ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, red, light brown, gold, dark brown and blue. Verses read 'GIVE HER OF THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS AND LET HER OWN WORKS PRAISE HER IN THE GATE' and 'THIS IS TO LET YOU SEE WHAT CARE MY PARENTS TOOK OF ME'. Signed and dated 'JULY ORR AGED 12'. A wonderful set of motifs, finely embroidered, including a grand house and garden, dogs, birds, deer, British crowns and coronets (King, Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Lord, Count, and Baron), initialled left to right IG MG PO MG CG IG EH, potted flowering plants and 7-tail-feather peacocks. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted (Couch-stitched) onto calico over acid-free mountboard. Sealed with acid-free backboard and tape.
