The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours reds, yellow, green, gold, white, black, blue and dark pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-12 Verse reads, 'JESUS permit thy gracious name to stand,>AS the first effort of an infant hand;>And while her fingers an the canvas move,>Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy.love.>With thy dear Children, let her have a part;>And write, thy name, thy self upon her heart.'. Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Staines Aged 10 Years 1803'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including potted flowering plants, fir trees, stags and flowers
