The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, black, brown and cream. Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand> As the first effort of an infants hand> And while her fingers oer the canvass move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her share a part> And write thy name thyslef upon her heart'. Signed and dated, 'Ellen Wheatley Aged 12 Years 1847'. A good set of motifs, including a gardening scene, dogs, birds, angels, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, fir trees, crowns and hearts
