1841 Sampler by Julia Warburton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Glued (with Conservation PVA Adhesive R11) to acid free card with chip board backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, dark brown, copper and gold. Verse reads, 'Lord when thy face approving shines>The labour thrives the cause is blest>Bless then the order that combines>To help the needy and distressed>Lord bless the brethren who rejoice>With timely aid the heart and cheer>Who hear the helpless orphans voice> And dry the mourning widows tear>Uphold all those who thus unite>Assist them in their solemn trust>To gladder sorrows cheerless night>And raise the mourner from the dust>Protect each brother on his way>Who travels now by sea or land>Be thou his guard by night and day'.
