1829 Sampler by Elizabeth Watts. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, gold, white, black and brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case. Verse reads, 'Jesus Permit thy Gracious Name to stand>As the first Effort of an Infant Hand>And while her Fingers on the Canvas move>Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love>With thy dear children let her have a part>And write thy Name thyself upon her Heart'. Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Watts March the 25th 1829'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house, dogs, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, trees, peacocks, butterflies and a cat (or is it an owl) sitting in a tree. Framed in a wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Fixed to linen with chipboard backing.
