Antique Sampler, 1762, by Elizabeth Lealman. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass. Loose mounted with a chipboard backing. There is a label from Amsterdam on the reverse of the frame, but we believe this to be an English sampler. The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Simple line border. Colours browns, cream, gold, pink, greens and blues. Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-9, and family initials. Inscription reads 'Lord Give Me Wis> dom To Direct My> Ways I Beg not Ric> hes nor Yet Length> of Days'. Signed and dated 'This is the Work of Elizabeth Lealman In 14th Year Of her Age In the Year of Our Lord 1762 Novmber the 6'. A few motifs including crowns, a bird, flowers, potted flowering plant, fir tree, a dog and a heart.
