The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral strawberry border. Colours green, copper, black, cream and blue. Family names stitched either side of the house: 'Peter Robertson. Margaret Robertson. Jannet Robertson. William Robertson. Charles Robertson. Peter Robertson.' And lastly, the sampler appears to be signed in black, 'David Robertson'. Although it is very unusual for a male to stitch a sampler, it is not unheard of. Place and date, 'Ely 1806'. Ely is a town in Cambridgeshire, England. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a ship, a house, birds, flowers, rabbits, potted flowering plants and peacocks.
