1850 Silkwork sampler by Ann Davies. Framed in a Victorian wooden frame with gilt slip and old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, white, black, pink, red and browns. Verses read, 'Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy>youth. While the evil days come not. Nor the>years draw nigh. When thou shalt say. I have>no pleasure in them'; 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom>and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding.'; and 'Honour thy Father and thy Mother that the days>may belong in the land which the Lord thy God>giveth thee.' Signed and dated, 'Ann.Davies.March the 7.1850 Aged 12 Years.' A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a peacock perched on a fence, crowns, hearts, potted flowering plants and colourful birds perched on sprigs of flowers.
