The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, white, black, pink, blues and browns. Verse entitled 'Gold' reads
'Gold, when to virtuous Hands 'tis given.>It bleffes like the Dew of Heaven:>Like Heav'n they hear the Orphans cries>And wipe the Tears from Widows Eyes>Virtue's the chiefeft beauty of the Mind,>The nobleft Ornament of Human kind:Virtue's our Safeguard and our guiding Star>That ftirs up Reafon when our Senfes err.'

A wonderful and busy set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, temples, fruit baskets, fir trees, a shepherd and shepherdess with their dogs and angels.
