1829 Adam & Eve Sampler by Hannah Legg. Framed in an old maple frame with rippled, old glass. Stitched over a wood stretcher frame with paper backing. The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, copper, gold, blues and browns. Inscription reads 'Be faithful> Unto Death> And I will> give you A> Crown of> Life'. Signed and dated 'Hannah Legg Her Work 1829'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a picket fence and garden, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, angels holding crowns and Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk.
