The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, pale blue, white, black, pink, cream and greens. Verse reads 'Times of sickness times of health>Times of penury and wealth>times of trial and of grief>Times of triumph and relief'. Signed and dated 'Ruth Lodges work in the year 1838'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a church, stars, dogs, a variety of birds, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, rabbits, fruit baskets, sailing ship, butterfly and Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk.
