The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, cream, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, copper, gold, pink, greens and black. Verse reads 'During the time of life allotted me grant me Good God>my Health and liberty I beG no more if more thou art pleas'd>to Give Ill thankfully the OverPluf receive'. Signed and dated 'ANN HICKS JUNE th 22 WC 1781 SC'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, stags, fruit baskets, squirrels, fir trees, crowns, a girl and a jester and angels also the name 'JAIN WHITEAR'
