1804 Motif Sampler by Mary Masey. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours green, cream, blue, red, green, copper, pink, brown and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Inscription reads 'Remember Death>Prepare to meet thy God'. Signed and dated 'Mary Masey Her Samper 1804' and 'MM 1804'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, titled 'The Tree of Knowledge, lions, owls, a cottage, angels, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, squirrels, crowns, stags, roosters, dogs, butterflies, guinea fowl, birds in a cage and buildings.
