The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering leafy border. Colours greens, cream, black, browns and blue. Inscription reads, 'A PRESENT FOR ELLEN'. Signed and dated 'GRACE WHITELEY WORK AGED 15 1829'. A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, squirrels, angels and a lady and a gentleman wearing traditional dress.
