1846 Sampler by Margaret Iceton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, cream, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, white, pink, green and black. Family initials. Verse reads
'Let spotless innocence and truth>My every action guide>And guide my unexperience youth>From vanity and pride>This day be bread and peace my lot>All elce beneath the sun>Thou knowest if best bestowed or not>And let thy will be done'.
Signed and dated 'THIS WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY MARGARET ICETON MAY 8 1846 AGED 15'.
A good set of motifs, including butterflies, a lion, stars, flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, fruit baskets, crowns, hearts, birds and a large Solomon's Temple motif entitled 'This is A view of Solomons Temple.'
