The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Star border. Colours brown, red, green, copper, white, black, pink, blue and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-21. Verses read 'Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into> the Kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which> is in heaven. St Mattw. Chapr 7. Verse 21' and 'Let mental charms be your unfading Bloom> Internal Beauty will survive the Tomb'. Signed and dated 'BENNET MOTTERHAM, ILAM SCHOOL STAFFORDSHIRE 1823 AGED 12'. A good set of motifs, including building ruins (or perhaps an unfinished motif of Ilam school), fir trees, crowns with initials and flowers.
