The sampler is worked in a cotton-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Simple embroidered border. Colours greens, cream, pale blue and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-21. Verse entitled 'The Messiah' reads 'The seas shall waste the skies in smoke> decay Rocks fall to dust and mountains> melt away. But fix.d his word his saving> power remains. Thy realm for everlasts> thy own Messiah reigns'. Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Roberts done this in the 9th year of her age 1845'.
