The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours black, cream, pale blue, pink, greens and light brown. Verse reads 'Since then the fairest form thats made> Soon withering we shall find> Let us possess what ne'er will fade> The beauties of the mind'. Signed and dated 'Emma Hulme Aged 12 Hanford School March 4 1829'. A wonderful set of motifs, including seven soldiers, one holding a flag of the St George's Cross (English flag), together with an officer and, possibly, King George IV, dogs, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, rabbits and stags.
