1817 Sampler by Jane Cottrell. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Stitched to linen with wood backing. The sampler is worked in cotton on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, green, dark brown, copper, blue and pink. Verse reads 'Ye Faithful souls who Jesus know,> If ris'n indeed with Him ye are,> Superior to the joys below,> His resurrection's power declare,> Your faith by holy tempers prove,> By actions shew you sins forgiven, > And seek the glorious things above,> And follow Christ your Head to heaven.> There your exalted Saviour see> Seated at God's right-hand again,> In all his Father's majesty,> In everlasting pomp to reign:> To Him continually aspire,> Contending for your native place,> And emulate the angel choir,> And only live to love and praise.' Signed and dated 'Jane Cottrell. Aged 12. 1817'. A good set of motifs, including a shepherdess and her dog, birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, blossoming trees, crowns, a sheep and butterflies.
