The sampler is worked in silk and silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering leafy border. Colours pale green, cream, yellow, pale blue, pink and black. Verses read
'You, whose fond wishes do to Heaven aspire,>Who make those blest abodes your sole desire;>If you are wise, and hope that Blifs to gain,>Use well your Time, live not an Hour in vain:>Let not the morrow your vain thoughts employ,>But think this Day the last you shall enjoy.' and 'Remember thy Creator in the Days of thy Youth while the evil Days>come not nor the Years draw nigh when thou shall say>I have no Pleasure in them.' Signed and dated 'H DUNCOMBE 1792'. A scattering of motifs, including potted flowering plants, fir trees, crowns, flowers and foliage tied with bows and hearts.
