1701 Sampler by Elizabeth Langley. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in wool on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Probably Scottish judging by the band of thistles; the extensive use of green and red colors; and the use of inexpensive materials - wool thread and coarse ground. Alphabets A-Z in upper case. Alphabet lacking J and U was normal until late 18thC but is preceded by more than the single criss-cross A, usual on English samplers of this age. Signed and dated 'eLiZABeTH LANGLEY ENdED ThIS SAMPLeR In The YeAR OF OUR LORD 1701'. Consists of elaborately worked floral and foliate bands and one band with four boxers.
