1803 Silkwork sampler with Biblical scenes. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. No border. Colours greens, cream, pale blue, dark brown, copper, silver, black, bronze, grey and gold. Verse reads 'IF Angels sung a Saviour's Birth> On that auspicious Morn> Then let us imitate their Mirth> Now he again is born> Himself he humbled to the Grave> Made flesh like us to show> That we as certainly shall have> A Resurrection too.' Dated '1803'. Unusual set of motifs, depicting scenes from the Bible, including Eve handing Adam the apple from The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, with a snake in its branches, and a motif which the stitcher has stitched beside 'The Angel of the lord driving Adam and Eve out of Paradise' and a potted flowering plant. The sampler may be unfinished. We think this because of the central area with no stitchwork.
