The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours blues, greens, silver, magenta, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads 'See how the lilies flourish white and fair> See how the ravens fed from heaven are> Then never distrust thy God for clothes and bread> Whilst lilies flourish and the ravens fed> Gay dainty flowers go swiftly to decay> Poor wretched lifes short portion flies away> We eat we drink we sleep but lo anon> Old age steals on us never thought upon'. Signed and dated 'Jane Roberts Anno Domini 1824'. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, the sun, birds, flowers, recumbent stags, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flower baskets.
